Gov. Benigno R. Fitial has designated May 17-23 as EMS Week to recognize the valuable accomplishments of Emergency Medical Service providers in the CNMI.

Fitial signed the proclamation Tuesday during which he also declared May 20 as Emergency Medical Services for Children Day.

As a vital public service, members of the Emergency Medical Service teams are always ready to provide lifesaving care to those in need 24 hours a day, seven days a week.

The CNMI Emergency Medical Service teams responded to a total of 4,520 calls in 2008.

“Access to quality emergency care dramatically improves the survival and recovery rate of those who experience sudden illness or injury,” the proclamation stated.

The Emergency Medical Service system in the CNMI consists of physicians, nurses, medical technicians, paramedics, firefighters, educators, and administrators.

The teams, whether career or volunteer, engage in thousands of hours of specialized training and continuing education to enhance their lifesaving skills, the proclamation stated.

Fitial also signed the proclamation declaring May 20 as EMS for Children’s Day, recognizing efforts in promoting the high level of emergency care given by EMS providers with pediatric emergency skills.

The proclamation states that the needs of children are different than the needs of adults in medical emergencies.

The EMS teams responded to a total of 474 calls for pediatric care in 2008.

EMS providers for children work closely with physicians, nurses, social workers, psychologists, medical technicians, paramedics, firefighters, educators, and administrators to identify and address the issues surrounding the provision of optimal pediatric care.

They assists in the development of training programs and guidelines for emergency care providers so that children with special care needs receive timely and appropriate care.

“It is proper and timely to bring recognition to the value and accomplishments of such dedicated men and women by designating EMS for Children’s Day,” the proclamation stated.
