Mayor Juan B. Tudela signed on Saturday a proclamation designating May 2, 2009, as Silver Banner Day on Saipan, to honor the sacrifices of men and women in the U.S. Armed Forces.

“The Silver Star Families of America was formed to make sure we remember the blood sacrifice of our wounded and ill by designing and manufacturing a Silver Star Banner and flag,” the proclamation said.

The flag is now being flown at the U.S. Army Reserve Center in Puerto Rico, where the signing ceremony was held.

Maj. Greg Sablan received the flag from Tudela right after the proclamation signing.

Tudela said the Silver Star Families of America freely give thousands of Silver Star Banners to the wounded and their families.

Aside from the banner and flag, Tudela noted that members have also provided care packages for the wounded.

The group’s mission, he said, is that every time someone sees a Silver Star banner on a window and a Silver Star Flag flying, people will remember the sacrifices made for the nation and its territories.
