The winners of the Maui Arts Festival will be announced tomorrow at the Office of the Mayor of Saipan.

Public information officer Tony A. Benavente said Mayor Juan B. Tudela will be giving out the awards to the winners, who will then go on to participate in the upcoming Maui Arts Festival in Hawaii.

The names of the winners will be announced in tomorrow’s awarding ceremonies scheduled at 10am. According to Benavente, all the winners are from Marianas High School.

In other news, Tudela is set to sign on Thursday, May 7, the proclamation for the 85th observance of the National Day of Prayer. The signing ceremony will be held at 11am at the mayor’s office.

This event is a collaborative effort by the 1,200 attorneys who are members of the Alliance Defense Fund Organization.

The group advocates the rights of people to freely live out their faith.

It was in 1952 that President Harry Truman first signed into law a joint resolution by the U.S. Congress setting aside a national day of prayer.

The law was amended in 1988 by then President Ronald Reagan, setting aside the first Thursday of May for the annual observance.

On this day, all people in the United States are encouraged to attend church to offer prayers.
