First table skirting competition a ‘success’ despite small crowd
The first table skirting competition might have drawn a small crowd but it was an instant success, with the three contestants showcasing their skills in conference setting.
The competition was a side event at the opening night of the 11th Taste of the Marianas International Food Festival and Beer Garden at the American Memorial Park last Saturday.
Fiesta Resort and Spa bartender Ronnie Guevarra won the inaugural competition by garnering a total of 200 points.
The contestants were judged according to several criteria that included difficulty of the design, balancing of the decorated table and the design’s appeal.
They were given 35 minutes to complete the design.
For his design, Guevarra said he needed to bring the tablecloth home and practice doing it before perfecting the process.
He has been employed with the hotel for 16 years but this is the first time he entered in a competition like this.
Guevarra is no stranger to winning because he topped the bartending competition once.
The two other competitors were Jimmy Maclang of Saipan World Resort (second) and Mar Santiago of Aqua Resort Club (third). All three received trophies.
Maclang, who has been with the hotel for three years but only learned table skirting six months ago, earned 175 points from the judges while 16-year bartender Santiago got 160.
