Fanians earned the right to face the formidable Islanders in the finale of “Gorilla Games” in the World Organized Rocball Community League tomorrow at the Marianas High School Gymnasium.

Fanians survived a five-team single elimination qualifier, which was held to determine a worthy challenger for the Islanders. The Islanders ruled the last five biweekly edition of “Gorilla Games,” prompting Saipan rocball creator James Feger to challenge other teams to end the Islanders’ reign.

The Soul Rebels, Ghasias Brothers, Sons of Soul, and U-8 joined Fanians in the qualifier.

Fanians drew first blood, juicing out the Soul Rebels, 99-76. In the second game, Ghasias Brothers booted out Sons of Souls, also in four sets, 109-89. Ghasias Brothers were soon knocked out of the qualifier after bowing to U-8, 89-109, Tuesday night.

U-8 returned to MHS Gym Wednesday night to face the Fanians in the qualifier finals. Fanians were off to a good start, taking the opening set, 27-18, but U-8 quickly recovered, winning the second set, 25-18. After two sets, Fanians were ahead by only two, 45-43, and increased it to 11, going into the fourth set following a 28-19 win in the third.

With U-8 losing the first and third set, it must win the fourth set to send the game in overtime. But Fanians had other plans and that excluded extending U-8’s life, as the former wrapped up the match with a 25-13 victory in the fourth set.

The Islanders-Fanians finale will be played at 6pm with the winner taking home $250 and the bragging rights of being kings of “Gorilla Games.”

The Fanians never made it to the first seven stagings of “Gorilla Games,” while the Islanders won over Mariano’s Boyz, Evenflow, Soul Rebels, Seven Kings, and No-Mercy.

Ghasias Brothers and Evenflow were the two other winners in the biweekly tournament with the former prevailing in the “Gorilla Games” kick off game after topping Okies, 108-98, on January 11. Evenflow quickly ended Ghasias Brothers’ reign with a 109-101 triumph on Jan. 25. But Evenflow failed to hang on to the top spot, too, as it lost to the Islanders two weeks after, 98-81. “Gorilla Games” became the Islanders personal playground since then.
