NMC Proa won its title showdown with Finance to rule the women’s division of the Budweiser 2008 Inter-Government/Business Slow-pitch Softball League Thursday night at the Capital Hill Ballfield.

NMC shut out Finance in Game 1, 14-0, and capped its impressive season with an equally easy 25-10 victory in Game 2. NMC also won the season’s pennant, finishing the regular season with a 10-2 mark before losing to Finance in the winner’s bracket semifinals.

Finance failed to capitalize on its twice-to-beat advantage in the finals, as they struggled both on offense and defense.

In Game 1, the best that Finance could do was reach first base. Finance hit a lot a fly balls, and NMC outfielders were quick to catch them.

In Game 2, Finance batters improved a bit, but it was the team’s loose defense and fielding errors that allowed NMC to pull away and complete the finals sweep.

Finance got off to a good start with Lenice Kapileo, Liz Lebria, and Pauline Tudela reaching home plate at the top of the first inning.

But NMC still took the lead, 4-3, after one complete inning with Kuki Pangelinan hitting a solo homer and her three other teammates also scoring.

NMC never looked back from thereon, as its batters continued making ground hits, while Finance defenders were either a step slower to pick up the ball or had butterfingers.

With Finance playing sluggish defense, NMC scored five runs each in the second and third innings, made seven in the fourth, and added three in the fifth before its first three batters in the sixth flied out.

Finance’s first three batters in the second inning were thrown out before Lilian Aguon and Tudela nailed one run each in the third. Finance was shutout, anew in the fourth and fifth innings before Tudela scored her third run in the game, while Julie Guerrero tallied one in the sixth inning.

At the top of the seventh, Finance needed at least 19 runs to keep its title bid alive. But it was not up for the big task, as Finance only scored four runs on Tudela’s two-run single, Lebria’s one-run double, and on an NMC error.
