Falling on deaf ears

As you know, I’m running for congressman of Precinct 5, which includes all of Kagman, half of Papago, San Vicente, Kannat Tabla and about a third of Santa Lourdes.

As a candidate, I go around to meet the residents. One resident living near the Kagman II playground told me the playground equipment is unsafe. He also wanted someone from the government to remove a broken barbecue grill in the playground because it’s dangerous for kids. I told the resident I would call CNMI Parks and Recreation to remove the grill. That’s two weeks ago.

I’ve called the Parks and Recreation office three times to ask them to remove the broken barbecue grill pit from the playground. As of April 13, no one has removed the grill. Last week, a staff member at Parks and Recreation told me that the director is on leave but they would forward the information to the acting director.

I have no idea what happened after that. This is an example of what’s going on in the CNMI government. People are getting paid to do service for the community and they’re not doing it.

I told the Park and Recreation staff last week that if the broken BBQ grill isn’t removed, I would go public with this. I want the people to know this sort of thing will not happen on my watch. We the people deserve better from government employees. I don’t mean all government employees but some departments need to remember that the government work for the people.

If you ask government employees who they work for, nine out of 10 would say they work for the government, But if you ask them who the government works for, it would take time for them to answer. The government works for the people. Don’t forget that.

With all that said and done, I want that Kagman resident to know I am trying to get that grill removed like I said I would.
