Beach Boys upset DCCA, advance to finals
Beach Boys finally broke the juggernaut of defending champion Department of Community and Cultural Affairs Wednesday night to advance to the finals of the 2009 Budweiser Inter-Government/Business Slow-pitch Softball League at the Capital Hill Ballpark.
B.J. Sablan and J.R. Suel powered the Beach Boys to a 20-7 win that snapped DCCA’s 21-game winning streak.
With one swing of the bat, Sablan hit a three-run homerun in the bottom of the sixth inning that capped a seven-run burst and the Beach Boys won via the 10-run rule.
It was Sablan’s second homerun of the night. He made his first homerun in the bottom second then singled in the third and was out on a fly ball to left field in the fifth for a 3-for-4 stint.
J.R. Suel went 4-for-4 with three runs including a solo homerun in the bottom fourth. Other Beach Boys players soon joined the fray as they easily found their targets against DCCA’s pitcher Mel Sakisat.
DCCA led 6-2 after one and a half innings before leadoff batter Sablan sparked the Beach Boys’ seven-run explosion in the bottom of the second with his first homer of the night.
Ota Noboyuki also connected in three out of four plate appearances, contributing three runs and an RBI single.
Max Kadisang, Mel Aldan, Oliver Schermidal, and Jun Salalila had two runs each, while Stan Aldan and Ricky George scored one each.
With the win, Beach Boys gained a twice-to-beat advantage and they could wrap-up the title with a win tonight against the victor of last night’s loser’s bracket game between DCCA and the winner of the Jets-Freedom Air encounter.
A win by DCCA could set up another showdown for the two teams but the defending champions must win twice over the Beach Boys to retain the crown.
Beach Boys remained perfect in the playoffs. They defeated P&S, 19-17, on April 14 and No Zone, 19-17, on April 20.
