May is Tourism Month in NMI
The top industry of the Northern Mariana Islands will receive full fanfare in May, as the community prepares to celebrate Tourism Month.
Gov. Benigno R. Fitial will officially proclaim the month during a proclamation signing ceremony on April 29, 2009. The public is invited to join the ceremony, which will be held at 1:30pm at the Office of the Governor on Capital Hill, Saipan.
The highlight of the month will be the much anticipated Taste of the Marianas International Food Festival and Beer Garden, slated for each Saturday in May from 6pm to 10pm at the American Memorial Park. Chefs of island hotels and other vendors will share their best island dishes at over 15 booths, while non-stop live entertainment and competitions take place on two stages. Admission to the event is free.
Island residents are encouraged to show their Hafa Adai-Tirow spirit by wearing islandwear—such as island print shirts and dresses and mwar (Carolinian head leis)—each Friday of the month. The Marianas Visitors Authority has also created a Facebook account “Hafa Adai Tirow Spirit Islandwear of the Northern Mariana Islands” for residents and visitors to share photos of their island attire.
“Tourism Month is an opportunity for everyone to celebrate the main industry of the Northern Mariana Islands, and we look forward to another festive month this year,” said MVA managing director Perry Tenorio. “Every member of our community has a stake in tourism, now more than ever.”
Other events throughout the month will include radio trivia and other public education activities.
As a prelude to the month’s celebration, tourism industry partners and community volunteers will hold a cleanup on April 28, 2009, beginning at 6am at American Memorial Park. Free t-shirts will be given to first 100 participants. (PR)
