Lack of funds scuttles Guam trip of 2 youth senators
The lack of funds may prevent two youth senators from taking part in an annual youth conference in Guam.
Saipan Tribune learned this yesterday after being told that the 11th CNMI Youth Congress has yet to receive a response to their request for funds from the Legislature.
The youth senators passed a resolution on April 18 asking the Legislature to provide funding for the members of the Youth Congress to attend the 19th Annual Youth for Youth Conference slated on April 25-27. Saipan Tribune learned that some $2,000 is being asked for the trip and accommodation of two youth senators.
A letter from Youth Congress Speaker Alana May Leon Guerrero, along with the resolution, was transmitted to the presiding officers of the Legislature.
Senate President Pete Reyes said yesterday, however, that he has not seen the request.
He also pointed out that, with the “very short” notice, the Senate may not be able to provide the needed help as its leadership account is limited.
Any appropriation request starts at the House before it is acted upon in the Senate for the governor’s approval.
The Youth Congress said it may lose the opportunity to participate in the Guam conference due to this lack of funding.
Youth Congress senators serve as volunteers following the waiving of their $25 per session honorarium since last year.
