UFO caging draws 10 teams, holds meeting tonight
Organizers of the 2009 UFO Inter-Organization Basketball League is calling on representatives of participating teams to attend a meeting tonight at the Filipino Workers Resource Center at the Marianas Business Plaza in Susupe.
So far, 10 teams have already signified their intension to join the UFO caging. The list include defending champion Samahang Ilokano at Pangasinense, VisMinda, Bayani Association, MDX, Samahang Manggagawang Filipino, NAMFREL, Northern Marianas Bartenders Association, MIFICPA, and UP Alumni Association.
Representatives of interested teams, who have no affiliate Filipino organization, are also invited to attend the 6:30 p.m. meeting.
Copies of ground rules will be distributed at the meeting, while organizers will discuss with the participants the entrance fee and uniform assignments.
UFO caging is returning this season after thee years of absence and United Filipino Organization is planning to kick off the league later this month.
UFO last hosted the inter-organization caging in 2005 with SIP beating Cabalen in a best-of-three title series, 2-1. SIP prevailed in Game 1, 88-79, but failed to sweep the series when Cabalen won Game 2, 99-85. SIP ruled the series with a 95-86 victory in the deciding Game 3, claiming its fourth title in six years of joining the league.
SIP players also won the most individual awards in the league. Edsel Mendoza was named Finals MVP, while Elmer Esdrelon made it to the Mythical Five, joining Mendoza, Andres “Jhun” Estolas of LIPS-Mobil, and Ronald Delos Reyes, and Dalewin Cortez of Cabalen.
SIP gunner Bryan Flores was best in three points, Jawn Joyner and Bing Marasigan of Visminda were best in assist and free throw, respectively, Cortez was best in block shots, Chris Domingo of Cavite-Country House was best in steals, Marlon De Dios of MDX Amateur Radio-Armatech was best in rebounds, and Rowel Aranda of LIPS-Mobil was the top scorer for the season.
Twelve teams joined the 2005-2006 edition of the UFO caging.
