Tigilau records score to beat for RGA April Ace
Ray Tigilau earned a chance to claim the RGA April Ace title after ruling a qualifying tournament Sunday at Kingfisher Golf Links.
Tigilau shot a net 71 to beat 11 other RGA members, including Jess Wabol, who also fired a net 71, but lost in the scorecard tiebreak on the front nine.
The 22-handicapper Tigilau tallied a 48 and 45 on the front and back nines, respectively for a gross 93. He had a net 37 on the front to down Wabol by a stroke.
Wabol, who has a two handicap, drailed a 39 on the front for a net 38. He finished strong with a 2-under par 34 for a gross 73.
Tigilau’s net 71 will be the score to beat when RGA holds its second tournament for April later this month. Tigilau will keep the April Ace if no RGA member post better than net 71.
Other RGA members who joined the April qualifier were Tars Olopai (72), Bae Young Man (73), Joe Wabol (74), Tony Rogolifoi (74), Dwayne Stephens (76), Asterio Tawanpiy (76), Jordon Kosam (78), Manny Mangarero (78), Ben Bae (86), and Tom Tebuteb (89).
The 8-handicapper Olopai was consistent at Kingfisher with his 42s on both nines for a gross 84, while Rogolifoi also shot in the 40s on both nines with his 43 on the front and 44 on the back for a gross 87.
Tebuteb and Ben Bae struggled, as they scored in the 100s with the former recording a gross 111 (59 and 52) and the latter firing 110 (54 and 56).
Ben’s father Young Man posted the second lowest gross of the day. The older Bae drilled a 38 on the front and improved his game a bit on the back with a 37 for a gross 75.
Tawanpiy tied Olopai for the third best low gross score of 84 after firing a 41 on the front and 43 on the back, while Stephens and Kosam had identical gross scores of 90.
Stephens recorded a 49 on the front and 41 on the back, while Kosam shot better on the front with a 46 before slowing down on the back with a 44.
