Two men were injured when their vehicles collided along Beach Road in Chalan Kanoa Monday afternoon.

Police said Vicente S. Palacios, 33, complained of pain in the neck and numbness in his left arm.

Sung Jin Kim, 59, sustained visible injuries on his face and bruises on his left arm. He also complained of pain in the left side of his chest.

Department of Public Safety spokesperson Eric F. David said yesterday that alcohol was not a factor in the crash.

Traffic officers determined that Kim caused the collision because he failed to stop or yield to vehicles that had the right of way while entering through a highway.

David said officers also noted that it is unlawful to drive any vehicle over, upon, or across any dividing section, or to make any left turn, semicircular or U-turn on any divided lanes on a highway.

David said DPS received a call about a vehicular accident in front of Courtney’s Plaza building in Chalan Kanoa at 2:06pm Monday.

When police officers and medics arrived at the scene, a white 2000 Toyota 4-Runner was resting partially on the inner northbound lane and was facing north. The 4-Runner, driven by Palacios, had extensive damage to the front.

A white 2005 Toyota Camry was resting on the shoulder/parking lot of Courtney’s Plaza facing south. It had extensive damage to the entire left side. Its driver, Kim, was still seated in the driver’s seat when the officers arrived.

Debris from the crash covered the entire portion of the road. Traffic heading both north and south was jammed.

Medics tended to both Palacios and Kim, who were later brought to the Commonwealth Health Center for further treatment.

Traffic officers learned that Palacios was driving the 4-Runner south on the inner lane of Beach Road when the Toyota Camry, being driven by Kim, suddenly made a U-turn from the parking lot of Courtney’s Plaza to go north.

As a result, the two vehicles collided.

David said two witnesses corroborated the statements of Palacios.

At CHC, Kim told traffic officers the only thing that he could remember was leaving Courtney’s Plaza to head back to his office in Chalan Kanoa.
