Commonwealth Ports Authority executive director Efrain F. Camacho assured yesterday the employees’ and passengers’ safety at the Saipan International Airport, saying that most parts of the site have sprinkler pipes in place.

The activation of the equipment is expected within the year, according to Camacho.

“CPA is developing plans to have it activated within a year, perhaps shorter,” he told Saipan Tribune yesterday.

In the meantime, CPA relies on its own firefighting unit. “The public is in little to no danger,” he added.

On other safety measures, the agency continues to upgrade its system.

Within a few weeks, the long awaited procurement and upgrading of the public address system will start. Funding for the project was provided by the Federal Aviation Administration.

Camacho said there are other renovation works in progress and the public will see the results by summer. Among them are the certification of the new baggage handling system that will eliminate the long lines at both the arrival and departure areas.

After the repair of its two main generators at the airport, CPA is now in the process of procuring a third generator.

Repairs on the runway are also expected to begin soon.

“CPA assures the traveling public that the terminal building is a safe place and all efforts are being taken to ensure the passengers’ comfort,” Camacho added.
