Various events leading to the 2008 XTERRA Saipan Championship will be held this week, including a volunteers meeting set at 5:30pm today at the conference room of DFS.

Wolf Mojica of Taga, Inc., which is at the forefront of organizing this year’s XTERRA Saipan and Tagaman Triathlon, said volunteers are needed for aid stations and other support group for the races.

The XTERRA Saipan Championship will be held this Saturday with four pros from Europe leading the list of participants. They are Renata Bucher and Jim McConnel of Switzerland and Julie Dibens and Sam Gardner of the United Kingdom.

Bucher is aiming to defend her title in the women’s division and is looking for her fifth straight win since beating three-time winner Jamie Whitmore in 2005. Dibens and Gardner are making their second trip to Saipan after missing last year’s competition.

In preparation for Saturday’s races, local and off-island participants are invited to join a 6am ride to a few portion of XTERRA course at Capital Hill today.

Tomorrow at 12pm, a Tank 2 Tank swim will be held at the beach north of World Resort. Another Tank 2 Tank swim will take place Friday afternoon before organizers proceed with the XTERRA 5K and 10K Trail Run, which will start at 5pm at Micro Beach.

A cocktail party will be held at Pacific Islands Club after the trail run Friday night.

On Saturday, participants are asked to be at Micro Beach between 5am to 5:30am, as races will begin at 6:30am.

Considered as the crown jewel of the XTERRA Global Tour, XTERRA Saipan Championship will feature a 1.5-kilometer swim, 30-km bike, and 12-km run.
