The Marianas Apnea Spearfishing Club announced that it is now getting ready for the 3rd Annual Spearfishing Tournament slated May 16 at the Smiling Cove Marina.

MASC president Morito Asai said the tournament would start at 6am and last until 4pm with no limitation on the area coverage.

He said the spearfishing area includes Tinian or Goat Island, except sanctuary and dive spots.

Asai also said participants may go to Banzai Cliff area.

Categories to be contested are biggest fish (first prize only) and total weight, which includes individual (first to third) and team (first to 10th places).

To qualify for submission, the catch must be at least 11 lbs.

The MASC president said there would be no fish category this year to minimize the time for weigh-ins.

The entry fee per person is $50.

Interested participants may start registering now and the deadline for submission of entries is on May 9.

Asai said that participants from Tinian, Rota, Guam, or other island residents are required to send through e-mail their registration forms before May 9.

Payments can be made a day before the tournament.

On the other, Saipan residents are required to submit or e-mail the form and make payment before the May 9.

Asai said registration forms would be sent via email in next few days.

Guam’s Mike Genereaux won last year’s tournament by topping the individual total weight category, while Scott Moen of Rota won the biggest fish category.

About 40 divers joined the tournament submitting a variety of fish including parrot, trivally, rudder, black snapper, sweetlips, unicorn or tataga, grouper, emperor, and goat fish in different sizes.
