North vs. South in Interscholastic All-Star Game
Sam Joyner, coordinator of the Inaugural Interscholastic Elementary Basketball Tournament, said they will be dividing participating schools according to zones to play in an All-Star Game set for May 2 at Marianas High School Gymnasium.
Joyner said the funding for this activity is still being secured from sources.
“This will be the first time for an all-star game so the particulars are still being developed. However we will divide the schools in zones and come up with two zones such as North vs. South or East vs. West,” Joyner said.
Before the all-star game, there will be the one-day tournament for the boys basketball this April 18.
The participating schools are Oleai, San Vicente, Tanapag, Kagman, Gregorio T. Camacho, and William S. Reyes elementary schools.
Oleai captured the girls crown by the beating San Vicente, 13-7, in the championship match last April 4.
Tanapag defeated Kagman, 16-7, in the battle for third place.
All six teams went to a single round robin elimination format, which will also be the same format used in the boys tournament.
All the scores of each team in its five games in the eliminations will be totaled and the two teams with the highest accumulated scores will automatically advance to the finals and No. 3 and No. 4 will play for third place.
The main purpose of this event is to assist in the mission of developing student athletes into future leaders through the basketball program.
“Our athletic program teaches life’s most important lessons to our students: sportsmanship, dedication, teamwork, respect for others, and respect for themselves,” Joyner said.
Joyner said that coaches from participating teams will keep the stats of their players and fax them to him and the players for the all-star teams will be determined accordingly.
“Each team will be made up based on stats. Coaches will parlay and decide who will coach, how long, and when,” he said.
Close to a hundred students are expected to play in the boys tournament, same as during the girls play two weekends ago.
