The Northern Marianas College has approved the hiring of five new instructors for the fall semester.

From the 14 vacant instructional posts, only nine are left unfilled, according to the institution’s senate faculty president, Frank Sobolewski.

The 14 positions became vacant due to faculty resignations or retirements. Sobolewski said some of these vacated positions have been advertised in job announcements and some have not yet been posted.

Saipan Tribune learned Friday that the five instructors are set to begin work at NMC on Aug. 3, 2009. These include one position at the Math Department and Social Science Department, two instructors for the English Department, and a psychology instructor.

Sobolewski confirmed that these five applicants were selected and approved by NMC president Dr. Carmen Fernandez from a pool of candidates.

Nine more instructors that will be hired will be assigned to health and physical education, health sciences, counselor for disability services, computer applications, business/accounting, two positions for elementary education, and two department chairs each for Nursing and Business.

It will be recalled that Nursing Department chair Lynne Curtis and Business Department head Eric Plinske retired last year.

Based on enrollment figures for the spring semester, NMC currently has 33 instructional staff attending to over 800 students.

Sobolewski disclosed in an earlier interview that many faculty members are overloaded due to lack of instructors. This means handling more than the required 15 credit units.

The college’s practice of issuing two-year contracts to faculty members has also been raised anew by the group, citing the lack of security in their jobs due to a provision stating that their contracts may or may not be renewed, with or without reason.

The college instructors want an indefinite contract that sets no expiration, and that they could only be terminated with cause.
