Guam netters top Saipan rivals
The Guam-Saipan showdown in the men’s open doubles division of the 9th Annual PIC/Gatorade Tennis Championships ended in favor of the visitors.
Guam’s Lency Tenai and Torgun Smith outlasted Kirk Schuler and Peter Loyola in three sets of their title match in the men’s open singles Sunday at the Pacific Islands Club hard courts.
The former Davis Cupper and Guam Tennis Academy coach Tenai and Smith took the opening set, 6-1, before Schuler and Loyola found their rhythm in the second set and nailed a 6-1 triumph.
In the third set, Tenai, who is also Guam’s national coach, and Smith raced to a 3-0 lead and never looked back, as they managed to break Schuler and Loyola’s service.
