Ex-governor Lang to run for a House seat
Former governor Froilan “Lang” Tenorio yesterday confirmed reports that he is running for a Precinct 1 seat in the House of Representative in this November’s elections.
He is expected to run as an independent candidate. He said being an independent lawmaker will help him work with officials from other political parties.
There are six seats up for grabs in Precinct 1.
Tenorio, who was the island’s highest official from 1994 to 1998, also sought other government posts in previous elections. These included CNMI Representative to Washington Office and senator.
In 2005, he was endorsed as the Democratic Party gubernatorial standard-bearer but came in last in a four-way race that was won by Covenant Party standard bearer Benigno R. Fitial.
A former Republican, Tenorio said his leaving the party was a personal decision.
Although he admitted being a friend of the incumbent governor, Tenorio claims he does not support a number of Fitial’s decisions.
Asked for his motive in running for a House seat, he said: “There’s no reason for me to run in the House seat if the incumbent congressmen in precinct 1 are doing their responsibility. I feel I can do something to address the present concerns of our people.”
Tenorio, known for being outspoken, said he hates to see the re-election of the same old faces.
“I believe we need six new faces in Precinct 1…” he told Saipan Tribune, adding that this will be his first attempt to run for a seat in the Legislature.
Tenorio said people have tested the capabilities of their current representatives and are unsatisfied with the performance of the incumbents. “We already know what the incumbents can and cannot do…for our people,” he said.
Tenorio described the state of the economy and the Commonwealth Utilities Corp. as the top concerns he will tackle if elected.
