Kieran Daly ruled last Saturday’s Olympic-distance triathlon from Paupau Beach via Bird Island Lookout and back.

The race was one of several events leading up to the XTERRA Saipan Championship and Tagaman Triathlon.

A total of 21 triathletes joined the event, according to event organizer Michael S. Johnson of the Northern Mariana Islands Triathlon Federation.

Johnson said the turnout was okay considering that fewer athletes usually join as the distance gets longer.

Unfortunately, due to lack of volunteers, the times of other finishers were not registered.

The only times Johnson were able to get are those of Daly’s (two hours and 20 minutes), runner-up Mieko Carey’s (two hours and 28 minutes), and third placer Lewie Tenorio’s (two hours and 40 minutes).

Johnson said Butch Sublemente came in fourth, but did not carry any timer during the race.

The event consisted of two laps of 750 meters swim (1,500m), two laps of 20,000 meters bike (40,000m), and two laps of 5,000 meters run (10,000m).

Also completing the full course were Joshua Manglona, Mike Johnson, Joe Ngirabuuch, Josh Berger, Mamiko Berger, Manny Sitchon , Fred Camacho, Matthew Mancao, Frederico Fernandez, Nate Hawley, Lewie Tenorio, and Tamio Nishikido.

There were five who did the half course—Paul Viator, Florian Braig, Heather Kennedy, Liz Church, and David Baines.

Kennedy was the first to complete the race, followed by Church and then Braig.

“Our next event is a hike on the XTERRA Saipan Championship run course (starting at Anaks Resort and finishing at Sugar King Park). This will probably be next weekend,” Johnson said.

He said the several races that had been organized the past weekends had been geared to build up endurance in preparation for the XTERRA Saipan Championship and Tagaman Triathlon.

Johnson hopes that many Saipan residents would join the local XTERRA and Tagaman.
