The Senate unanimously passed a bill renaming the Rota Memorial Park in remembrance of a fallen solider.

Senate Bill 16-52 would designate the park as “the Corporal Joe G. Charfauros Jr. Rota Veteran Memorial Park.” The House of Representatives is scheduled to vote on the measure today.

Charfauros, 33, was one of four U.S. soldiers killed on June 20, 2007, in Baghdad, Iraq, following injuries sustained from an improvised explosive device that blew up near their vehicle. The soldiers were assigned to the 1st Battalion, 64th Armor Regiment, 2nd Brigade Combat Team, 3rd Infantry Division, Fort Steward, Georgia.

During the 15th Legislature, the Rota Legislative Delegation passed a Commemorative Resolution honoring Charfauros’ “courage and valor [so] that [he] shall be forever remembered by the very grateful people of the Island of Rota and of the Commonwealth of the Northern Mariana Islands.”

“Therefore, the Legislature finds that the park shall remain in honor of all Rota’s military veterans, however, Corporal Joe G. Charfauros Jr.’s name shall be adjoined to the park’s title in honor of his ultimate sacrifice for our country,” the bill stated.

Joe Junior was a police officer on Rota. He went back to Rota in December 2006 for his wedding to wife Stellita. They had three kids, Mikeangela, Junelle and Joe II.
