Nineteen books shelves, 50 boxes of books, 100 boxes of linens, and 60 bags of toys will soon be heading to Saipan. All the donated items are bound for Saipan’s Public School System and hospital.

“Diverting these useful items from our landfill, to an area with desperate needs makes so much sense,” says REPAC President Glenn Wakai, “Despite Hawaii’s current economic struggles, we live in a state of great prosperity compared to our Pacific neighbors. This donation will greatly enhance the quality of education and healthcare in the Northern Mariana Islands.”

Reach out Pacific (REPAC) is a non-profit which takes surplus medical and educational supplies from Hawaii to Pacific Islands. The organization has sent more than $300,000 worth of goods to islands from American Samoa to the Philippines.

This is a real community effort.

The US Bankruptcy Court is donating the shelves as they move to storing more of their documents electronically.

Shriner’s Hospital is undergoing renovations and had to dispose of a large volume of toys and children’s clothing.

Moanalua High School was purging its stock of books and donated hundreds of books bound for a public library in Saipan.

2,000 linens not used by Waikiki hotels will cover hospital beds in Saipan.

The assortment of items will be loaded into a container at Island Movers and then transported to Saipan by Matson Navigation Company.

“We are pleased to help REPAC deliver these items into the hands of Saipan’s school children.” says Matson VP, Vic Angoco, “Matson remains committed to supporting the communities we serve in the Pacific.”

REPAC was established in 2005 and is a part of the Association of Pacific Island Legislatures, of which the Hawaii legislature holds membership. REPAC has sent surplus medical and educational supplies to Samoa, Chuuk, Yap, Kosrae, Pohnpei, Palau, Guam, Saipan and the Philippines. (Glenn Wakai)
