The U.S. Department of Transportation’s Federal Highway Administration gave the go signal for the Department of Public Works to begin soliciting bids for the long-awaited Cross Island or Back Road improvement project, according to DPW secretary Diego B. Songsong.

The multi-million project, funded by DOT’s FHWA, would create a new and safer highway from San Vicente to Capital Hill on Saipan.

Back Road has areas that have long been in hazardous conditions, and therefore pose danger to motorists and pedestrians.

Songsong said the solicitation will be out in the newspaper in a week or two.

“Finally, we got the approval from Federal Highway to proceed with Cross Island phase 1. It’s good for the CNMI. We’ve been pushing for this road project to come into reality and it’s about time. I’m happy about it, and the governor has been pushing for this project to move forward,” Songsong told Saipan Tribune yesterday.

This year, DPW is looking at several road improvement projects finally getting off the ground, the biggest of which is Rota’s Route 11 or the Sabana Road and drainage improvement project with a price tag of $2.788 million.

Just two weeks ago, DPW led the groundbreaking ceremony for the $148,155.97 construction of the Laulau pathway (phase 1) in Kagman. The project, which is expected to be completed in 120 calendar days, involves the construction of a concrete pathway and the installation of pavement markings and signs.
