33 pairs to compete in IT&E doubles tourney

The 2009 IT&E Badminton Doubles Tournament will kick off this Saturday with 33 pairs entered in the initial offering of the year of Northern Marianas Badminton Federation.

The men’s B division drew the most participants with nine tandems. The list include the pairs of Daniel Macario/Jorge Olanda, Jojo Savellano/Noli Santos, Mario Diola/Paul Navarro, Keno San Pablo/Aries Cordero, Andrew Galves/Victor Regis, June Pineda/Ariel Mariano, Rommel Villavisa/Emil de Belen, Roger Vales/Efren Cacdac, Rommel Catalma/Obert Aguilar, and Alfred Acosto/Edwin Maratas.

Men’s A division has five duos, namely Macoi Aguda/Saul Gargallo, Hapi Gabriel/Robert Reyes, Edwin Montoya/Gary Bandoja, Lito Mendoza/Joseph Santos, and Geri Hibi/Eric Pena.

The women’s B division title will be contested by eight pairs led by Loida Ito and Lucelle Lampera. Also on the list are the tandems of Lea Estinopo/Rose Lazaro, Shirley Kim/Angel Mae Ito, Anna Alvarez/June Padua, Marlene Peraja/Emily Vargas, Anna Rose Omori/Malou Mendoza, Marylyn Montano/Cheng Saturno, and Ingrid Sanchez/Cristy Villaflor.

The men’s and women’s C divisions have five pairs apiece.

Entered in the men’s C division are the duos of Puy Macario/Chris Hilario, Rodwealth Espana/James Digno, Frank Villagomez/Ric Brien, Ezekiel Macario/Roding Domingo, and Luis Camacho/Arnel Banzagale.

The pairs of Annette Ta/Malou Mendoza, Irene Santiago/Annette Quiambao, Ruby Gozon/Jenine Savellano, Dorie Pineda/Hazel Dela Santa, and Elna Curate/Merlie Tolentino will battle for the women’s C title.

The men’s A and men’s and women’s C divisions will have a double round-robin format, while the men’s and women’s B will be a single round robin affair. The Top 4 teams in each division will move to the crossover semifinals with the No. 1 squad meeting the No. 4 team for the first finals berth. The No. 2 and 3 squads will collide for the other finals ticket.

The doubles tournament will run until April 19 with matches to be played every Friday, Saturday, and Sunday only. Games every Friday and Saturday will run from 6pm to 10pm, while Sunday’s matches will begin from 2pm until 8pm.
