WASHINGTON, D.C.—The Commonwealth Department of Public Health will receive a grant of $221,128 from the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services for diabetes and tobacco prevention programs, according to CNMI Rep. Gregorio “Kilili” C. Sablan yesterday.

“I want to congratulate Project Director Tayna Camacho and all of the people who worked putting this grant together,” said Sablan. “Controlling diabetes and helping people with a tobacco problem should be high on our list of public health priorities in the Northern Marianas.”

Sablan also said another $364,162 of American Recovery and Reinvestment Act money would be coming to the CNMI from the Department of Housing and Urban Development.

The money is for the new Neighborhood Stabilization Program that will help the local government to acquire and redevelop foreclosed properties. Once rehabilitated, the properties can be resold. The purpose of the program is to stem the decline in house values that can occur when neighboring homes stand empty after foreclosure. (PR)
