Hundreds of Bangladeshis on Saipan join their compatriots around the globe today in celebrating their 38th Independence Day.

Raki Bul Islam Minto, one of the organizers of the Bangladesh Cultural Group, expects some 300 members of the community to take part in tonight’s celebration which will include cultural songs, music, inspirational talks, food and a time to meet each other once again.

The celebration will be held at a former auto shop near the Bank of Saipan building in Garapan at 8pm.

“We invite members of the Bangladeshi community to join us,” Minto said yesterday.

Community members come together during the celebration which started in the CNMI in 1995, Minto added.

It was on March 26, 1971 that Bangladesh declared its independence from Pakistan following years of political and economic discrimination by West Pakistan.

Official figures say about 3 million people were killed and millions more displaced during an ensuing nine-month war ending on Dec. 16, 1971.

East Pakistan officially became the nation of Bangladesh on Dec. 16, 1971.
