CK Legends ahead in rain-halted Masters game
The third game in the Masters division of the 2009 Navy Hill Friendship Basketball League Monday night at the Garapan Basketball Court was suspended due to rain with the Chalan Kanoa Legends leading Shirley’s Coffee Shop, 43-36, in the third quarter.
The game will resume on a later date with the Legends’ Ronald Delos Reyes going for his first of two free throws and with 6:14 left in the third canto.
Delos Reyes used his height and heft advantage to score easy baskets underneath in the first half. He started his scoring spree with a triple in the first period and went on to nail four baskets in the shaded lane. He then canned three of his four charities to finish the first period with 14 points and give the Legends a four-point lead, 22-18.
Jun Tabora and Manny Lagumbay were the two other Legends player who scored in the first period, while Shirley’s had seven players contributing on offense with Dindo Laxa leading the way with five markers.
Delos Reyes saw limited minutes in the second half, but still came up with six points to keep the Legends in the driver’s seat, 39-30. Jun Pepito and Henry Manipon added three apiece in the second period to help the Legends’ cause.
Shirley’s was held to 12 points in the second canto with only Joseph Galulu and Edwin Arenas making more than a fieldgoal in that period.
In the opening minutes of the third period, Shirley’s outscored the Legends, 6-4, to move within seven before the game was halted due to rain.
Bong Malasarte, Galulu, and Arenas scored two points each in the third quarter, while Delos Reyes nailed all of the Legends’ four markers in that canto.
Meanwhile, only one semis slot is available in the Open division of the Navy Hill caging. Inchcape, KFC/Taco Bell, and Athlete’s Foot gained the first three semis berths, while pennant champion Dollar Days and IT&E were dueling for the last Final Four seat last night. The semifinal round will be played this weekend.
KFC Taco Bell took the first semis ticket after downing MBI in the first game last Thursday, 99-92, while Athlete’s Foot pulled off an upset over the second-ranked Docomo in the second match, 104-92, to advance to the next round.
Inchcape secured the third Final Four berth after dominating Rollers, 79-67, in their rain-suspended playoff game that started on Saturday and finished on Sunday.
