The NMI Council for the Humanities is inviting the public to attend the 7th Annual Covenant Day Debate to be held on Monday, March 23, 3pm at the CNMI Supreme Court Chamber, Guma Husticia, Susupe. Admission is free.

This year’s competition will be in a town hall format featuring two finalists each competing in a junior division and a senior division. They will debate the resolve “U.S. Public Law 110-229 violates the CNMI’s right of self-government under Section 103 of the Covenant.”

Judges for the event include former judge Edward Manibusan and attorneys Vincent J. Seman and Judy DLG Torres. Veteran debater Patricia B. Coleman will serve as the moderator.

The NMI Council for the Humanities sponsors this event each year in conjunction with the National Forensic League and the Middle School Forensic League. Its goals are to promote research and critical thinking skills as well as to encourage students to examine key Covenant-related issues that affect life in the Commonwealth.

The Covenant is the political document that establishes the Commonwealth of the Northern Mariana Islands and its unique relationship with the United States.

Additional information about the Covenant Day Debate and other humanities programs may be obtained from the Council’s website at www.nmihumanities.org or by calling 235-4785. (PR)
