From only 19 members when it was revived last month, the Tinian Chamber of Commerce has grown to 37 members.

Phillip Mendiola-Long, president of the Tinian Chamber of Commerce, said about 50 people attended yesterday’s general membership meeting, and the group welcomed an “additional 18 new members with a total membership now of 37 businesses.”

Mendiola-Long, however, declined to comment on the military plans discussed by Maj. Gen. Eugene G. Payne Jr., the assistant deputy commandant for the U.S. Marine Corps’ Installations and Facilities, who was the keynote speaker at the meeting.

The Joint Guam Program Office has yet to respond to Saipan Tribune’s inquiries.

Mendiola-Long said Payne discussed the “tentative” military plans for Tinian that are separate from the $15 billion Guam military buildup.

The Tinian Chamber of Commerce said it will be the voice of businesses on Tinian on issues such as the impact of a federal immigration system on the economy, the consequences of military activities, and capital improvement projects on the island.
