Gov. Benigno R. Fitial said he fired Lino P. Tenorio from his position as commissioner of the Department of Corrections because Tenorio was not loyal to him.

“I want my cabinet to be loyal because I told him I would choose people who would help me run this administration who are qualified, competent, and loyal, so when he decided to become not loyal, then I gave him my respect,” Fitial said.

Tenorio intends to run for mayor as an independent. Fitial is a member of the Covenant party.

“So it was just a gesture of respecting his decision,” Fitial said of letting Tenorio go.

Tenorio could not be reached for comment.

Capt. Dolores San Nicolas will act as acting commissioner for the DOC.
