Roundtable discussion on World War II commemoration this Thursday
The NMI Council for the Humanities cordially invites the public to attend a discussion on the remembrance and commemoration of World War II in the Pacific to be held at the American Memorial Park Visitors Center Theater this Thursday evening, March 19, beginning at 6:30pm.
“War Memories: America, Asia and Pacific” will feature a roundtable discussion by professors Keith L. Camacho, Greg Dvorak, and Yujin Yaguchi to explore the celebration and contestation of World War II memories.
For more than a century, the peoples of America, Asia, and the Pacific have interacted in ways that have yet to be fully appreciated and understood. World War II, in particular, has been a key focal point for the peoples of this region.
Professors Camacho, Dvorak, and Yaguchi will provide differing perspectives on this important but heretofore little studied topic drawing from their personal research on war memories and commemoration.
Dr. Camacho, whose family is from Guam and Saipan, is an assistant professor of Pacific Islander Studies at UCLA. Dr. Dvorak is completing post-doctoral research at the University of Tokyo’s Graduate School of Information Studies. Dr. Yaguchi is Associate Professor of Area Studies (North American Division) at the University of Tokyo.
This event is a part of the Council’s ongoing “Community Lecture” series that offers thought-provoking presentations on a wide variety of topics of interest to the public. Contact Council staff at 235- 4785 for more information about this event. (PR)
