The Marianas Visitors Authority is making preparation for this week’s arrival of a Chinese TV station that will visit the Northern Mariana Islands to introduce the tourist destination to their viewers in a two-hour special program.

An eight-member media team will explore the islands of Saipan and Tinian on March 17-21, 2009, to produce a broadcast for airing in April 2009. The program will be divided into five-minute segments throughout the month airing on the station’s tourism channel targeting 500,000 viewers in 20 cities, largely middle-class travelers and families.

“This television special on the Northern Marianas is scheduled to air ahead of China’s Golden Week holiday in May, which is excellent timing for Saipan, Tinian and Rota to attract more travel,” said MVA managing director Perry Tenorio. “Our proximity to China still makes us an attractive and affordable vacation destination as individuals keep a close watch on their travel expenditures.”

The preliminary itinerary for the group on Saipan includes stops at diving hot spot Grotto; Laolao Bay Golf Resort; Bird Island Lookout, home to hundreds of seabirds; World War II historic sites Banzai Cliff and the Last Command Post. Snorkeling, a banana boat ride, and parasailing will be enjoyed, as well as a sunset dinner cruise in Saipan’s lagoon. The team will also take a jungle tour and explore shopping opportunities at DFS Galleria.

On Tinian, the team will visit Taga Latte Stone Park where limestone monoliths carved by ancient indigenous Chamorros still stand, World War II historic sites, the scenic Blow Hole. Local trolling will also be featured.

MVA will assist the promotional production with arrangements for filming permit, water sport activities, Managaha tour with lunch, scuba dive, and filming at Laolao Bay Golf Resort. The media tour is being organized and co-sponsored by Tinian Dynasty Holidays, which will assist with all other expenses and arrangements, including airfare. (PR)
