Hyatt, Tinian Dynasty top foes

CNMI Men’s Nationals standout Jericho Cruz exploded for 30 points to lead Hyatt Regency Saipan to a 97-86 win over Saipan World Resort in the 2009 Tinian Dynasty Hotel & Casino Invitational Basketball League Monday night at the Tinian Municipal Gymnasium.

Cruz drilled 10 of his total points in the payoff period, as he and Chris Arreza helped Hyatt come back from a 65-67 deficit at the end of the third quarter. Hyatt outgunned World Resort in the fourth canto, 32-19, with Cruz and Arrreza combining for 18 points.

The game was close in the first three quarters before Hyatt pulled away in the fourth. After the first 10 minutes of the match, Hyatt and World Resort were tied, 23-all. Hyatt took the lead at halftime, 43-40, with Bernard Aquino nailing 13 of his 17 points in the second period.

But World Resort grabbed the upperhand in the third quarter with Dennis Vinas and Banjo Basila teaming up for 17 of World Resort’s 27 points in that canto.

In the fourth quarter, Vinas was the lone player to score more than two field goals for World Resort, while Arreza, Cruz, and Edmark Mendoza joined forces in giving Hyatt an 11-point win.

Mendoza finished with 18 points, making 14 in the second half, while Arreza had 15.

Basila led World Resort’s losing cause with 23 markers.

In the second game, Tinian Dynasty Hotel & Casino outlasted Aqua Resort Club in overtime, 95-94.

Charlie Fernandez scored eight of Tinian Dynasty’s 12 points in overtime to give his team its second win in three games. Noel Sabordo made Tinian’s other four points in the extension period.

Tinian led by nine, 68-59, going into the fourth quarter, after a 35-point explosion in the third canto. Aqua was held to 18 points in the third, but managed to send the game in overtime after outgunning Tinian in the fourth, 24-15.

Aqua eventually ran out of steam in the extra five minutes of the game with only Kelvin Fitial making more than one field goal in overtime.
