Intoxication: A sad story

Here’s an example. After being away from our beautiful island of Rota for more than six years, I was very disappointed by the dim-witted example displayed to me in the presence of my off-island manhoben visitors by three individuals, one of whom is a Rota casino commissioner and the other a DYS representative, at Aquarius Bar & Grill the morning of March 8, 2009, which prompted me to write this letter.

I blame the casino commissioner and the DYS representative for this third person’s actions (who was a passenger in the commissioner’s vehicle), in allowing him, rooting for him, and provoking him to shout demeaning words that were uncalled for. As a casino commissioner of Rota and DYS rep, I would have thought that you are both good role models and respectful citizens. What a mistake to even think that! If you’re both gentlemen with class that morning, you could have advised him not to act like a juvenile delinquent or you could’ve driven your vehicle away, so I would not have heard the profanity your passenger said: “Yanggen taya’ nobian miyo pues fan litira hamyo puet hagu nai dikiki yan ginen Amerika!” and more I could not mention, which definitely referred to me since I’m the only one who recently came back to visit. Just what was your interpretation of this man’s statements that you chose to keep open your window and laugh at what had been said to me? Watching you both chuckling your faces off was a total shock. You both demonstrated the lowest form of character. I believe you do not deserve my respect.

I thought after being away a couple of years that this type of old school behavior is long lost but to the contrary it is still being practiced. Although I’m saddened by the incident, I was glad that it is only being practiced by old farts. This old-school behavior of bullying must stop! Is this the type of atmosphere you want to display to investors, visitors, and our young community of Rota?

What happened at the Aquarius Bar & Grill was witnessed by my friends and off-island visitors. I suggest that you exercise caution when out in public, particularly when you are intoxicated, because it brings out the worst in you. Did you even remember that I went to your table to mangingi to both of you? I know our group was having a blast at the bar but we never bothered the elderly’s table. It was at the closing of the bar when this nasty act occurred for no apparent reason.

Oooh! I know what triggered your juvenile act! I think you were all bothered that the bar ladies paid more attention to our manhoben table than yours. But what can I say, that’s how we do it!
