The consultant group hired by the Northern Marianas College to do background checks on potential employees said yesterday that a total of seven individuals have so far been checked by the agency, majority of them from the East Coast.

Clyde Norita of Jural Group said the company entered into an “open contract” agreement with the college, in which they are called only for specific background check assignments.

Norita said he doesn’t own the company but is a part of the corporation.

“The Jural Group is a corporation and the contract is not with me…but with the corporation. I can say that we’re charging NMC the same rate we charge everybody for our services, which is $65 per hour,” he told Saipan Tribune.

He disclosed that the “open contract” was signed in November.

So far, the group has completed work on seven individuals, Norita said, with one from Micronesia and the rest from the East Coast.

Norita said the group averages four hours to check specific individual through e-mails and telephone conversations.

Majority of the completed checks were for potential instructors for the college.

“We’ve already done seven background checks on potential employees of NMC. Although we do some local checking, it is only when NMC asks for it on a case-to-case basis,” he said.

Norita described his work with NMC as “not full time work.”

His investigation work begins with getting the files from NMC and checking to see whether there are discrepancies in the records the applicants provide the college.

However, Norita said they are not entitled to make a recommendation that will influence the selection of candidates.

“When NMC intends to hire somebody, they would call us and we will pick up the file. Whatever discrepancies we found on their records, we submit it to the college,” he said.

Norita said he doesn’t know if any of these seven individuals were hired by the college.

“We don’t get involved in the selection process or recommend anybody for a position,” he added.
