Six members of the Southern High School Band have been invited to the command performance of the 2nd Tumon Bay Music Festival after winning gold medals earlier this week.

The command performance concludes the competition and gathers the previous days’ winners in all the categories for a final show.

The six students from the CNMI bagged gold medals in solo performance and rock and jazz.

Haelin Kim was the top winner in the solo competition after dazzling spectators with her talent and skill using the cello.

Five Manta Ray Band members were honored in the rock band category—Joseph Jang, Vincent Choi, Sang Woo, Yoon Choi, and Chang Kang—collectively known as SSHS Manta Flyerz.

On Saturday, the entire Manta Ray Band will defend its title in the concert category.

According to Lois DeWitt, wife of the group’s musical conductor and director Will DeWitt, the Manta Ray Band is having daily rehearsals to prepare for their performance on Saturday.

They are also having band clinics under the direction of famous Japanese band instructor, Miestro.

The following are the initial winners of the 2nd Annual Tumon Music Festival:

-Choir category: Harvest Christian Academy Honor Choir (elementary); Cdr. William C. McCool Middle School Choir (middle school); Harvest Christian Academy High School Choir (high school); and Guam Adventist Academy Hand Bell Choir (hand bell choir open division).

-For the popular idiom ensemble: SSHS Manta Flyerz; Caitlin Lawson-DODEA Guam High School (vocal solo category); SSHS’ Haelin Kim (instrumental solo category for cello); Evelyn Quiel of Simon Sanchez High School for piano; and Zhen Yu Su for violin.

Solo performers are scheduled for a repeat performance Friday and Sunday.
