Police rescue two men in distressed vessel
Two men who had gone out to the Saipan lagoon to go bottom fishing and trolling were rescued by police yesterday after the engine on their boat unexpectedly died.
In a report issued yesterday, the Department of Public Safety identified the two as Jose R. Sablan, 55, the boat’s operator; and crew member Isidro R. Sablan.
The report states that DPS received a call from the Emergency Management Office around 7:41am about a distressed vessel located about 2 to 3 miles west of Managaha Island.
DPS Boating Safety and the Commonwealth Ports Authority Ports Police launched the DPS rescue boat, Zodiac III, and responded to the distress call. Police officers eventually located the distressed boat and towed it back to the Smiling Cove Marina. The operator and crew member were found to be in good condition. The vessel was inspected and Boating Safety officers found no violations.
Police learned that the operator and crew member left the Fishing Base dock and headed north toward Managaha to go bottom fishing and trolling. When they reached north of Managaha, the boat engine died. The operator attempted to repair it but was unsuccessful; that was when EMO was called.
The distressed vessel was described as a 17-foot white and red fiberglass vessel. (Saipan Tribune)
