Grey: Nothing to get excited about USCIS opening
Opening the U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services’ Application Support Center in Garapan does not mean that everything is ready for the implementation of the federalization law, according to CNMI Immigration director Melvin Grey.
Grey told Saipan Tribune the USCIS people may be excited about the opening of the Application Support Center but what it can only do right now is the green card applications for immediate relatives, which has been in existence.
“It is just putting an office here. So that’s not any indication that things are up and running,” Grey said.
A grand opening ceremony was held yesterday for the USCIS Application Support Center at the TSL Plaza in Garapan.
The Center will reportedly allow, among other things, people in the CNMI to provide fingerprints and other biometrics for their green card applications without having to go to Guam.
Grey earlier stated that the federal people have been telling them that the implementation of federalization will be by June 1, but no hint has been given whether to delay it.
The director said indications are that there will be extension because Homeland Security has nothing on the ground yet.
“They have done nothing at the airport,” he pointed out.
