The Department of Homeland Security’s U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services will celebrate the opening of its first office in the Commonwealth of the Northern Mariana Islands tomorrow, March 10, 2009.

The grand opening ceremony for the Application Support Center will be held at 10:30am, at the TSL Plaza in Garapan, Saipan.

“This opening is a very important step, allowing USCIS to better serve the people of CNMI,” said Michael Aytes, USCIS Acting Deputy Director, who will travel to Saipan for the grand opening. “People from the Commonwealth will no longer have to travel to Guam for fingerprinting, biometrics, or federal immigration information.”

The Application Support Center opened in the TSL Plaza in Garapan on March 2, 2009, with the first week devoted to the initial on-island appointments and setting up the new office. The opening of the ASC is the culmination of months of work to ensure that those in the CNMI will be able to obtain information and other services from USCIS.

In addition to providing the traditional service of fingerprinting and biometric services, the ASC will also offer information appointments for general immigration inquiries through. Appointments are made using InfoPass, a multilingual Web-based system that is free on www.uscis.gov. USCIS’s customer service line (800) 375-5283 is now accessible toll-free from the CNMI, and the most current information about federal immigration in relation to the CNMI is available in the Press Room of www.uscis.gov.
