3 rescued from disabled Rota-bound boat
The vessel Anastasia out of Hagatna, Guam, became disabled on a transit from Hagatna Boat Basin to Rota Saturday. The vessel with three men on board was found 22 nautical miles northwest of Ritidian Point and was drifting to the west.
The crew of Assateague launched a small boat to accomplish the rescue of the three men. Lt. James Jarnac, Commanding Officer of Assateague, reported that the situation was very hazardous due to 10-foot waves and 22-knot winds.
The crew of Assateague arrived on scene during the night and found the disabled vessel. Waiting until daylight they began the rescue effort yesterday morning and three hours later safely removed the three men from Anastasia. The men were brought back to Guam.
The success of this search and rescue effort was attributed to the float plan that was left with family members who alerted the Coast Guard when Anastasia had not arrived on Rota as planned yesterday. Credit can also be give to the owner of Anastasia who prepared for the trip with necessary safety equipment, including flares and a VHF radio. Early notification by the family and good radio communication made the task of locating Anastasia a simple one. (USCG)
