Laguna Regatta sets sail this weekend
The 34th Annual Laguna Regatta casts off this week in the warm waters of the Saipan Lagoon. The competition is the longest continuously running sporting event in the Marianas.
The 2009 Laguna Regatta will consist of up to 10 races for Hobie 16 class boats. Sponsored by the Over the Reef Yacht Club, this year’s event commenced with a welcoming party yesterday, where registration took place. Races will start with a competitors briefing at 8:30am today at Fiesta Resort & Spa Saipan beach and continue tomorrow. The race course is set up just northeast of Managaha Island.
Spectators can catch the best view of the event from Managaha Island. Free transportation is available. Contact Tasi Tours or Saipan Sea Ventures for details and schedules.
For visitors wishing to compete, several excellent condition Hobie 16s are available for charter for $250, payable at registration. Interested individuals may contact Tony Stearns at tstearns@itecnmi.com for details and arrangements.
Registration is $75 per person and will cover the cost of boat entry, two lunches, a T-shirt, and the awards dinner.
“The Over the Reef Yacht Club Laguna Regatta has been a longtime favorite of local Hobie enthusiasts,” said Marianas Visitors Authority managing director Perry Tenorio. “We look forward to as many visitors as possible competing or enjoying the race as spectators.”
The awards dinner will be held Sunday at 6pm at 360 Revolving Restaurant.
