SSC Invitational, Ocean Swim this weekend
CNMI and Guam swimmers will have a busy weekend, as they compete in the 2009 Saipan Swim Club International Invitational Meet and the SSC Oceania Swim.
SSC will be hosting the Invitational this today and tomorrow at the Kan Pacific Swimming Pool in Marpi, while the 31st edition of the annual ocean swim competitions will take place on sunday at Saipan World Resort.
Around 80 swimmers from Saipan and Guam are expected to participate in the two tournaments. Three swim clubs from Guam—Manukai, Tarakito and Typhoon—are coming over to Saipan to challenge SSC and Tsunami Swimming Center Saipan bets.
The Invitational will start at 3:30pm today and will continue on Saturday with the first session beginning at 8am and the second at 3pm.
SSC ruled last year’s Invitational after collecting 938.5 points. The hosts got 578.5 points from its male swimmers and 360 from female bets.
Guam Typhoons scored 520 points to finish second, while Tsunami Saipan placed third with 457. Guam’s Manukai Athletic Club was fourth with 456.50 points, followed by Tarakito Swim Club, 328, and Tsunami Swim Club Guam, 309.
Last year’s SSC Ocean Swim drew 85 participants with Manukai’s Danielle Atoigue topping the 600-meter race and SSC’s Maxi Braig winning the 1,000-m swim.
Benjie Schulte of Tarakito finished first in the 1,300-m swim, while Tsunami Saipan’s Rezne Wong ruled the 2.5-kilometer swim.
Registration for this Sunday’s ocean swim will start at 7am. Adult swimmers can enter either the 1.3k or the 2.5 race. Age group swimmers will have their assigned distance. The 8-and-under will swim in the 600-m race, 1k for 9 to 10 age group, 1.3k for 11 to 12, and 2.5k for 13 to 14 and 15 to 19 age groups.
Participants who will register before race day will pay only $30. Entrance fee to be paid during the race day is $35. Swimmers will receive race T-shirts and admission to the awards banquet. Interested participants who do not wish to join the banquet will only pay $15.
“Early registration is encouraged. Applications can be picked up at the Kan Pacific pool from 4pm to 6pm or by e-mailing coach@saipanswimclub.com,” SSC treasurer Lisa Kimball said.
