Jets seize lead, Dragons win over Red Sox
Jonathan Cabrera pitched nine strikeouts as the top-seeded Dragons gored the Red Sox, 4-1, even as the Jets seized the solo lead in the Major Division of the 2009 Saipan Little League Baseball Association.
Cabrera also scored the Dragons’ third run in the top of the first inning as they opened the match with a 3-0 lead on the way to the win, their second straight after dropping their first assignment to the UMDA Hustlers on opening day last Feb. 15.
The Dragons also won over the Tanapag Little Falcons, 7-4, last Feb. 22.
First baseman Nathan Camacho and centerfielder Jerald Cabrera scored the Dragons’ first two runs on passed balls.
Jerald reached home plate anew on a single by catcher Jonathan Villagomez in the third to make it 4-0.
Centerfielder Jequinn Aguon made the Red Sox’s lone run in the bottom of sixth on a single by Alex Monkeya, who advanced to second by a stolen base with one out into the inning.
After that, the Dragon’s pitcher struck out the next two Red Sox batters, Nathan Sablan and Estan Cruz, for the win.
It was the Red Sox’s second consecutive loss in three starts.
In the other games last Saturday, the Jets posted an easy 10-3 win over the Little Falcons to seize the solo lead as they remained undefeated in three outings.
The Jets also defeated the IT&E Dolphins, 19-7, last Feb. 16 and prevailed over the JPO enforcers, 15-0, last Feb. 22.
The Dolphins bounced back with an 8-3 victory over the Enforcers also Saturday, while the As Matuis Twins snapped a two-game losing skid with an 11-5 triumph against Shell.
UMDA Hustlers and Ol’Aces are the only other teams still undefeated at 2-0.
In the Junior Division, Ol’Aces currently shares the lead with the Patriots with similar 3-0 cards.
Ol’Aces defeated D’9ers, 15-2.
Defending champion Kagman Lion Heart also snapped a two-game losing run with a 17-6 victory over the winless Fielders (0-3).
In the Senior Division, the Jets still paces the pack with an immaculate 4-0 mark by edging out the D’9ers, 4-3.
