Galvin quits as MCS school principal
Galvin Deleon Guerrero, who recently announced his bid to become lieutenant governor of gubernatorial bet Juan N. Babauta under the Republican ticket, has formally stepped down as school principal of Mount Carmel School to pursue his political career.
His resignation was effective last Feb. 9.
In an e-mail yesterday, Deleon Guerrero described his decision as “trading the joys of education for the pain of politics.”
“Yes, I did resign as the principal of MCS which became effective on Feb. 9 this year. It was a very difficult and sad decision to make,” he told Saipan Tribune.
He disclosed that his decision was also intended to spare the school from the “impact” of politics arising from his candidacy.
“After all, to some degree, I have traded the joy of education for the pain of politics…but I love MCS and because I love the school, I didn’t want to subject the school to any political backlash or political interference that could result from my candidacy,” he said.
Deleon Guerrero, who is also an Education Board member, vowed to serve the body up to the prescribed period allowed under the law.
A candidate must resign from the board upon certification of candidacy by the Election Commission, pursuant to Article VIII of the CNMI Constitution.
“Until such time, however, as a board, we have decided that I will stay on board to continue working on important policy initiatives, especially the recent American Recovery and Reinvestment Act, which will fund key improvements in our schools. For that, I am happy to have the opportunity to continue serving our children and our teachers,” Deleon Guerrero said.
Yesterday, MCS president Margaret C. Dela Cruz confirmed Deleon Guerrero’s resignation and the school’s intention to seek a replacement for the position.
Based on the school’s immediate job vacancy announcement, the minimum requirement for the post includes graduation from an accredited college or university with a bachelor’s degree. Qualified candidates will earn from $32,000 to $33,948 per annum.
MCS is home to over 400 students with over 20 professional faculty and staff.
