Come together to build vision—Sablan
Rep. Tina Sablan is calling on citizens to come together to discuss the issues affecting the Commonwealth.
Beginning today through March 25, Sablan is calling on concerned citizens to hold sunrise meetings to gather a cohesive vision.
“They’re really just what we’re all doing anyway, all over the island,” she said, adding that it could be over coffee, during Happy Hour or at other gatherings.
People are already discussing ideas and issues, she said.
“So this is kind of doing what you were doing anyway, but giving it focus,” the representative added.
Sablan suggested some questions that could be discussed, such as, what should the role of government be in the Commonwealth? And, what core principles and values should guide the government of the Commonwealth?
The representative is asking sunrise meeting participants to take notes so they can be compiled into one cohesive plan. In April, that plan will be put for public comment. Hopefully, she said, there will be candidates for the 2009 election who are willing to champion the vision.
“That’s the short term goal. I think there are great ideas out there,” she said.
The idea is nothing new, Sablan said. She heard President Obama did something similar and held platform meetings during his campaign.
“It was the same thing,” she said. “Everyone was just coming together…to build the democratic platform.”
