Authorities arrested last week in western Garapan a sales person who has been allegedly overstaying in the CNMI for two years now.

Cangben Shi, 34, male, Chinese, was brought to the Superior Court Friday for a bail hearing after the Division of Immigration filed a deportation case against him.

Associate Judge Ramona V. Manglona imposed a $200 cash bail for Shi’s temporary release and ordered him to appear in court on Feb. 26 at 2pm to explain why he should not be deported from the CNMI.

Immigration investigator Nicolas T. Reyes stated in his report that on Wednesday, officers from Immigration, Department of Labor, and Attorney General’s Investigation Unit were outside Rui Jin Store in western Garapan, monitoring the activities of suspected illegal aliens.

The officers then saw a white Toyota Corolla car arrive and park in front of them.

A man later identified as Shi boarded the car as a passenger.

Reyes said he approached and learned that Shi was not in possession of any type of identification to verify his immigration status.

Reyes said they later learned that Shi’s nonresident worker’s entry permit expired on Jan. 25, 2007.

Reyes said the respondent has no pending Labor case and did not file any new request for renewal of his worker’s permit.

Labor’s records indicate that Shi used to work as a farmer in 2004. His last employment was a sales person for L.X.J. Development Enterprises Inc. in January 2006.

Immigration has lately been actively pursuing suspected overstayers on the island, most of them Chinese.
