The Division of Environmental Quality’s Safe Drinking Water Program recently started a web-based water operator certification testing as part of the Water Operator Certification Program.

The CNMI is one of only five states/provinces that conduct the operator certification test via the web-based procedure.

The CNMI, represented by environmental specialist Derek Chambers, recently attended an Association of Boards of Certification conference where he presented drinking water issues.

The certification program is based on ABC standards and uses the ABC certification exam.

Chambers’ presentation was on how DEQ administers the test, and how the web-based test has improved services for local water operators.

“CNMI is one of only several states that offer on-line testing for water operators. Many other states would like to offer these exams, but it takes time and effort to change their regulations,” said Chambers. “I received many positive comments from conference participants, and many people who said that they now know where the CNMI is!”

The information provided at the conference helps DEQ improve the certification program.

The annual conference was held in La Quinta, California, from Jan. 26 to Feb. 2, 2009. Conference participants included all State and Provincial Environmental Certification programs that use ABC testing services.

The Association of Boards of Certification has been assisting states and provinces with environmental certification programs since 1972. Our membership consists of over 90 certifying authorities representing more than 40 states and 10 Canadian provinces which certify over 150,000 water and wastewater operators, laboratory analysts, and backflow prevention assembly testers.
