Fitial sets meeting with DOI’s Salazar

Gov. Benigno Fitial leaves for Washington, D.C. today, where he will meet with new Department of the Interior Secretary Ken Salazar.

Salazar, who was appointed by President Obama and confirmed by the Senate, will head Interior, which oversees the insular areas, including the CNMI. The Interior distributes federal funds and grants to the CNMI.

Charles Reyes, press secretary for the Governor’s Office, said that during the introductory meeting Fitial would continue to discuss the Commonwealth’s priorities and needs.

Fitial, who will return to the CNMI at the end of the month, will also be attending several other functions: the National Governor’s Association meeting on Feb. 21 to 23; the Pacific Basin Development Council meeting on Feb. 24; the Interagency Group on Insular Areas meeting on Feb. 24; and the U.S. Coral Reef task Force meeting on Feb. 25.
