Kurt Barnes was voted president of the Northern Marianas Athletics during the association’s election Tuesday night at China House Restaurant.

Barnes will also serve as director of masters affairs.

Also re-elected were Lou Wabol as vice president; Robin Sapong, secretary general and treasurer; and Elias Rangamar, director of coaches development.

NMA also named directors of various committees. They were Kae Moses, director of officials; Doris Rangamar, director of women’s affairs; Lawrence Camacho, director of equipment and facilities; Gabriel White, director of marketing and sponsorship; and Allan Moses, director of road races and cross country.

Two teachers were selected Public School System representatives with Nick Gross of Marianas High School representing secondary and middle schools and Ronald Olopai of San Antonio Elementary School for primary schools.

Private schools have a lone representative in Saipan Community School principal Bobby Winkfield.

Completing NMA’s set of officers for 2009 season were board members Penny Jones and Meng Rangamar.

NMA is the governing body for all athletics events in the CNMI. It is part of a strong 21-member Oceania Athletics Association and was the host of last year’s Oceania Grand Prix Series and Oceania Regional Championships.

The two regional tournaments took place at the Oleai Sports Complex and featured world class athletes from Australia and New Zealand, and the 19 other members of OAA.

After the election of officers for 2009, NMA is expected to buckle down to work with the CNMI National Championships and the All Schools Meet on top of its agenda.

The two local tournaments are usually held in May and have student-athletes from primary, middle, and secondary schools competing in field and running events.
